A very rare gaming token ~ Rarity 6 Used in card games as a substitute for money. This example is of a Baronet registry and is one of the finest examples of the art. These are exquisitely done and are from the Edwardian Period of England. Owned by the British Railroad Magnate of England's family, these Gilt gaming counter Tokens are extremely rare and absolutely stunning and in the shape of a diamond. These were owned by Lord Gainford's family and His grandfather, was called "The Father of British Railways" Absolutely pristine condition and the only ones I have ever seen. The picture is showing the front and reverse of two tokens however this sale is for one token. Marquise diamond shaped Token. Extremely nice weight to them and charming item. In the Victorian days, many evenings were spent playing cards. Gaming counters were used in card and gambling games instead of money and at the end of the game was when the winnings were settled you came up with the cash. Most of the gaming counters had the image of Queen Victoria or George III on them. However, in 1883 they were banned and were prohibited from making anymore with their images on them. The provenance comes with these tokens. I believe that anyone who collects coins should have a hard times token and a gaming counter in their collections. This is not a run of the mill token but an exquisitely styled token that is rarely seen. |
