Born March 2, 1609-December 6,1672) was King and Grand Duke of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and Duke of Opole in Upper Silesia, titular King of Sweden 1648-1660. His parents were Sigismund III Vasa (1566-1632) and Constance of Austria Habsburg (1588-1631). His older brother, and predecessor on the throne, was Władysław IV Vasa. He was the third and last Polish monarch from the House of Vasa
He was always in the shadow of his elder brother and was not well liked. He vascillated between the Priesthood and being royal. He was a great collector of Art including Rembrant's and many other Dutch painters. He ruled for 20 years and having been a Cardinal n the Catholic Church , he ended up going to a monestary til the end of his life.
